Money Saving Tips

These days, in our world of instant gratification, it's more important than ever to be able to stay focused on saving money any way you can. So to help you monitor your spending habits and cut expenses, here are 20 easy ways you can save every day—starting right now.
Savings

1. Make a weekly "money date." Commit to sitting down with your money once a week for a money date. During this time, update your budget, review your accounts and track your progress against your financial goals. Like any relationship, if you want your financial life to improve, you must spend time with your money.
2. Plan out your meals for the week. Taking a few hours every weekend to grocery shop and meal plan for the week will definitely save you money, as dining out is the No. 1 expense for most households. By eating at home, you save money that would otherwise be spent on tax and tip—and you usually save calories, too.
3. Cut out cable. Gasp! Cut out TV?! Never! But with services like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime, you can now watch your favorite TV shows and movies for a fraction of the cost of cable TV.
A study by market research firm NPD Group shows that cable bills will soon grow to an average of $123 per month, or $1,476 per year. By switching over to an online service or cutting out TV altogether, you can save that money for another financial goal—such as paying off debt, traveling or saving for a down payment on a home.
4. Switch to an exercise pass program. If you love working out, an exercise pass program such as Class Pass is the way to go. By paying a membership fee of $99 per month, you are welcome at many of the best studios in your area. And classes—like cycling, yoga, Pilates, barre, strength training, boot camp, dance and more—are unlimited. This beats having to pay for each studio's monthly membership or individual class fee, which can add up to hundreds of dollars a month.
5. Host a potluck. The more friends you have, the more money you spend on lunch dates, birthday parties and gifts. Switch it up and, instead of meeting over a fancy dinner, host a potluck and have everyone bring his or her favorite dish. That way, you can save money you'd spend on restaurant extras, such as tax, tip and parking—and you'll usually have a more intimate meal together, too.
6. Leverage lodging rental websites. Finding a place to stay while traveling is so convenient when you use a lodging rental website such as Airbnb, Travelmob or Housetrip. You can often find a place that has a kitchen (so you can cook meals at home to save money) at a rate that's comparable to hotels. You can even rent out your own place on sites such as Airbnb while you travel to make some extra cash to pay for your own travel expenses. It's a win-win scenario.
7. Make coffee at home. This one's not my favorite, as I absolutely love going to coffee shops and drinking delicious organic coffee. However, spending $4 to $5 on coffee every day definitely adds up. So try my approach and allow yourself a few days a week to buy coffee at cafés, and make it at home the rest of the time.
8. Work more. When you're working a lot, there's not much time left to shop and spend money. So stay busy and pursue a career you love.
9. Wait 48 hours before you click "buy." Since we can have anything we want these days with just the click of a button (there's that instant gratification again), you need to find a system to help buffer your impulse purchases.
Example: Wait 48 hours before spending money on things that cost more than a certain amount. When you do, you will find that, most of the time, the item was more of a "want" than a "need." Plus, you'll save money and work toward being more mindful with your spending.
10. Use blogs and Pinterest to learn DIY beauty treatments. Self-care is important—but going to spas and getting pedicures, massages, etc., can really add up. Allow yourself a certain amount to spend on these things; then use blogs and apps like Pinterest to find at-home beauty treatments to help you save money. Often you can find a DIY organic option using common household or kitchen products.
11. Outsource online. Time is a commodity, and your time is precious and valuable. And these days, there are so many tasks you can outsource that will save you time and money. But how do you figure out if outsourcing something is worth the expense?
A great thing to do is to actually calculate the cost of your time, which will help you figure out if you can pay someone to do something for less than your hourly rate. Here's an example: A monthly net income of $3,000 divided by a total of 160 hours worked equals an hourly rate of $16.75. Now that you know the value of your time, you can strategically outsource it using a service like Fiverr or Task Rabbit for a fraction of your own hourly rate.
12. Get creative with gifts. Find creative ways to express your love to friends and family members with free, lower-cost or handmade birthday and holiday gifts. After all, a handwritten note explaining why you love someone can be more sentimental than some expensive gift he or she may never even use. Most people will appreciate the thought behind your gifts more than anything, so don't be afraid to save money and find free ways to celebrate birthdays and holidays.
13. Choose quality over quantity. This can apply to food, clothes, electronics and much more. Although it's tempting to choose the more budget-friendly version of an item, sometimes choosing quality over quantity will save you more in the long run. Save up your money and get the best-quality product you can afford, and leverage the cost-per-wear philosophy with more expensive clothing and shoes.

This applies to food, too: Buying quality organic food can nourish you in ways that fill you up more than the prepackaged, processed stuff and potentially save you money on health-care expenses in the future, since you're taking good care of yourself. Find a balance that is right for you and choose quality whenever you can.
14. Deal with your emotions. Excessive spending is often a way to avoid feeling certain emotions. If you check in with yourself before you go on a major spending spree, you may be able to identify if you're feeling bored, lonely or stressed and are therefore spending money as a means to avoid the underlying emotion. Check in with yourself before you buy, and be mindful with your spending.
15. Stop trying to keep up with the Kardashians. It's hard to keep your blinders on and not compare your financial life to that of others, especially celebrities. However, it is really important to be clear about what matters most to you and make sure you build a financial plan that supports that vision. This will keep you moving toward your financial goals and stop you from spending money on things you don't need, to impress people you don't like.
16. Read a personal finance book. When you learn about personal finance, you'll learn even more strategies to help you save money for your goals in life. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more you can save.
17. Balance your "FOMO/YOLO" mind-set. With social media controlling our lives like never before, people often fall victim to the "fear of missing out" phenomenon and instead go overboard with a "you only live once" mentality.
While it is important to live in the present and soak up each precious moment of life, make sure you balance that out by saving for your financial future, too. Without checks and balances in place, you can find yourself saying yes to everything and spending more money than you have—all due to the fear of missing out.
18. Map out your financial goals. Be very specific with your financial goals. For example, saying, "I want to save for a home down payment" is not enough. You need to map out how much you need, by when and what you need to save every month in order to reach the goal. When you know what your targets are, you're more likely to stay the course and continue saving for them for the long term.
19. Keep your eye on the prize. Staying focused on your goals takes discipline and determination. Saving can be easy and exciting at first, but after a while you may lose that initial motivation and start to find other things you can spend that money on. To avoid veering off course, check in with your goals regularly and keep your eye on the prize.
"The truth is, there are many ways to save money. Find the ways that work for you, and slowly start incorporating the strategies into your life."
20. Track your progress. Americans save only 5.5 percent of their money compared to the 20 percent that personal finance indicates you should put away. But instead of feeling ashamed about your lack of savings, just start by saving something.
Even 1 percent is better than nothing. Track your progress and continue to increase the number year after year. Step by step, day by day, you can get to that 20 percent savings level.
The truth is, there are many ways to save money. Find the ways that work for you, and slowly start incorporating the strategies into your life.

Why You Should Save Money

Why You Should Save Money

With credit so easy to get, why would anyone want to save money and buy with cash? If you want something, you pull out the plastic and then pay it back with payments over who knows for how long. If you can afford the monthly payments, everyone does that; what's the big deal? The unfortunate thing is that this sort of thinking is making sense to too many people these days.

Here are ten reasons why you should save:

1. Become Financially Independent

The measuring stick for being rich is different depending on who you talk to. However, the one thing that the notion of “being rich or wealthy” means to most people is having financial independence and savings to depend on. Calling your own shots, financially speaking, means having the freedom to make choices in your life separate from earning a pay cheque.

This may mean being able to take a vacation whenever you want to, leaving work and going back to school to switch careers, starting your own business or investing in someone else’s start-up, helping family members, taking on a lesser paying job that is more personally satisfying than financially beneficial, or a big one these days - retiring when you want to rather than working because you have to.

Financial independence isn’t the same as being rich, but not having to depend on receiving a certain pay cheque can sure make you feel rich beyond your wildest dreams! Having savings that you can rely on is what it takes to become “rich,” no matter how you define it.

2. Save 50% on Everything You Buy + 24% on Groceries
If you normally charge all of your purchases on your credit card, and then you don’t pay off your credit cards in full every month, because of added interest charges you are probably paying at least 50% more for everything you buy. If you are relying on your credit cards to afford your lifestyle, break your expensive credit habit by saving up for your purchases ahead of time.

With savings, you can buy things when they are on sale and take the time to make better spending choices. People with savings can also stockpile groceries when they are on sale (items that are non perishable or which can be frozen). One author suggests people who do this can possibly skip one grocery shop a month and save 24% a year on their grocery bill.

3. Buy a Home
The bank won’t lend you money to buy a house unless you have a down payment, and you are not allowed to borrow a down payment. You must have this money saved up or have someone give it to you—and not lend it to you. Your down payment needs to be at least 5% of the purchase price of the house, and then the bank will consider lending you the other 95%. There are all sorts of other costs and fees that you need to pay when you buy a home, so you will need an additional 5% just for those costs. Savings is what will open the door to owing a home.

4. Buy a Car
When you want or need to buy a new car, you will need to have a down payment in order to get a car loan at a reasonable interest rate. You could of course “borrow” the money from your credit card, but at 20+%, how is that getting you ahead? Zero percent financing is reserved for great customers, so a car loan is bound to cost you something—and it could be a lot. The best thing you can do is save up as large a down payment as you can afford, and then consider your options. Maybe buying a quality used car rather than a new one will be what it takes to get you the vehicle you want.

5. Get Out of Debt
If you ever want to get out of debt, you have to have some money saved. Sounds ironic, doesn't it? However, the credit cards are never going to get paid off if you have to keep using them for every “emergency” that comes along. Even if you are an awesome planner, stats show that half of us experience at least one totally unexpected expense each year (and half of those will be unexpected car trouble).

So before you start aggressively paying off your credit cards, you should save up $500 to $1,000 as a reserve fund. Then when unexpected things come up, you can pay them out of your reserve fund rather than put them on your credit cards. Maintaining a “reserve fund” will also help you to notice if your spending is getting out of hand.

6. Annual Expenses
If you want to have a good, relatively stress-free financial life, you need to save for annual expenses. These may include money for gifts, vacations, vehicle maintenance, minor home repairs, fixing appliances, property taxes and possibly income tax. It can be tempting to refinance a mortgage to pay off debt or to use a line of credit to pay off high interest credit cards, but it is dangerous to endlessly put expenses on credit without actually paying them off. The best way to manage these types of expenses is to save for them in advance. This will not only save you money, but it will give you peace of mind.

7. Unforeseen Expenses
What will you do if your car needs some major repairs? Do you have $500 to $3,000 on hand? What if your house needs some repairs, or it is discovered that you are living in a building that leaks? You can’t always count on the bank to lend you money for all of these things. It is much better to anticipate a worst case scenario and have some money saved.

8. Emergencies
As much as we hope that emergencies won’t happen, we all know that they do. A family member can develop a health issue, you might need to make an emergency trip, you may have a car accident or breakdown, severe weather could flood your basement or crack your pipes, or you may have to fly to a loved one’s funeral. Any of these emergencies can be expensive, and we all know that we will likely encounter some sort of emergency from time to time. So why not be prepared rather than potentially become another victim of an emergency.

9. You Could Lose Your Job or Get Hurt
In good times, everyone thinks that their job is secure, but in bad times, many begin to realize that bad things can happen to anyone. You could suddenly lose your job, your business could dry up, you might get injured—either physically or psychologically or become too sick to work. Any of these things can happen to you. Employment Insurance (EI) doesn’t kick in until you have been unemployed for 6 weeks. Do you have enough savings to tie you over or will you be living on credit? Living on credit during a time like this can quickly make a bad situation worse. Minimum payments become higher and higher until they are unaffordable and credit limits no longer budge. Then when you finally do get some income, what used to be enough doesn't get you by because you have all these new debt payments to make each month. So now you actually need more income than before because you'll need to pay down these debts and eventually work to get them paid off.

10. To Have a Good Life
There are huge emotional, psychological and physical consequences to always living stressfully, from hand to mouth, pay cheque to pay cheque.

There is a little known truth that happiness can come from being organized. Being organized isn’t going to make you happy all by itself, but it can sure help. There’s so much in your future that you don’t have control over, so putting aside some money to spend when you need it is actually organizing and taking control of your future and financial affairs. You have nothing to lose by saving - and only a happier future to gain.

Advantages and disadvantages of online shopping

advantages and disadvantages of online shopping

Advantages
  • Access - Online shopping allows you to shop from any vendor, at any time, anywhere in the world. Virtual window shopping enables all users to shop at their leisure and across multiple marketplaces.
  • Time Saver - You no longer have to get in your car and have to drive to the mall to shop. There are no lines and you can come back to your cart whenever you want.
  • Online Deals and Promotions - Before you checkout, you can scour the Internet for online coupon codes or special discounts. Many companies send coupons to their customers who have opted into their email marketing campaigns, delivering them with the latest product or service information and what current promotions they are currently holding.
Disadvantages
  • Shipping Rates - Though some companies offer free flat rate shipping, it still may come at a cost. For instance, a clothing store may offer free shipping but at a minimum of a $50 purchase.
  • Waiting - If you're an impatient person, waiting for your product to be delivered can be a pain. There is a lack of instant gratification and even possibilities of delay when it comes to receiving your items.
  • Refunds/Returns Disputes - If an item comes damaged or not as described, you will want to return the item or be refunded your money. Depending on where you purchased your item, there can be different policies for refunds and returns; this process is tedious and is prolonged since you would have to ship back the item and wait on the buyer to refund your payment.
--
The list can go on and on for the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping. Instead of creating a pros and cons list, you should discover ways to become a better online shopper in the event you do want to purchase items online.

Here are some tips on become a smarter online shopper:
  1. Do Your Research - Before making a purchase, research more about the company whether its through a review site or checking on social media. Brands who value their customers are more likely to be engaged online because they understand the importance of being transparent. Does their website look trustworthy? What payment gateways do they except? What have others said about their service? Reduce your risk and protect your money by learning more about the brand first.
  2. Read Online Reviews - Discover what others have to say about the product or service you are about to purchase. A lot of consumers leave honest reviews about a product (i.e. true to size, came as depicted, etc.) or a service (excellent customer service, was satisfied, was disappointed, etc.) that can help influence your decision to click and buy.
  3. Read the Fine Print - Always know what the return and refund policy is before buying. Some companies offer a year return policy - others can range in the 14-30 day return window. Some may only offer exchange. Save yourself the frustration and discover what your risks are when purchasing.
  4. Look for Online Deals - Online shopping gives you the ability to cross-compare prices across multiple websites so you can get the best deal. Look into different coupon sites and see discount codes other consumers have to share. If you really like a brand, stay connected with them and subscribe to their newsletters as they may offer you exclusive promotions for your loyalty.

Memories of rain ravaged Madras

As the recent deluge recedes and landmarks in the city become visible once again, sheets of water vanish to reveal the black tar on roads, and a battered population tries to get back to its feet, images of rains, floods and suffering from the past come to the mind.
Though cyclones, depressions and storms are an annual occurrence in Chennai, some years like 1985, when former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran was evacuated from his Ramapuram garden home, or 1976, when the Army stepped in to keep the Manali oil refinery running, are unforgettable.
1903- Rains bring floods

In 1903, the year the Indian National Congress session was held in Madras, the city faced heavy rains and floods. Historian V. Sriram says that leading lawyer and judge of the Madras High Court V. Krishnaswamy Iyer, who was the main force behind the session, had put up delegates at his bungalow on Luz Church Road. “After the session, his work was greatly appreciated by those in the welcoming committee and even by Dada Bhai Navroji, who was impressed by his shraddai,” he says.
1918 - 'Cyclone of unusual fury'
The year 1918 too was bad. “A terrible cyclone of unusual fury passed through Madras. The Madras public was quite unprepared to meet the uncommon storm as the report was received yesterday and could not be published in the newspapers,” says a report in The Hindu on November 11, 1918.
1943: No trains to ride
Writer Ashokamitran, who came to Madras in 1943 to drop his sister at her husband’s home in Saidapet, recalls how trains wouldn’t ply to Saidapet due to the rain. “We had bought tickets for Saidapet but the train stopped at Mambalam. We took a jutka to Saidapet and dropped her,” he says. It was in 1943 thatThe Hindu’s Srinivasan offered to print other newspapers when power supply was restored to The Hindu alone.

The 1985 floods bear a semblance to this year’s fury. The Kotturpuram slum clearance board tenements were flooded, with Ambattur and Madhavaram dairies flooded most of the city went without milk, water from Chembarambakkam was released and people residing on the banks were cautioned to move to safer places. It was this year too that Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran and his wife Janaki shifted to the Connemara Hotel after waters from the raging Adyar river surrounded their Ramavaram Garden house. He took a boat from his house to reach his car parked on higher ground on the Porur Road and then drove to the hotel.
In more recent times, in 2005, torrential rain, caused by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, disrupted life in Chennai and northern Tamil Nadu in October. At least 50,000 people were shifted to relief centres, as houses in several low-level areas were submerged. The rainstorm in northern Tamil Nadu came just as the Cauvery districts were slowly recovering from the heavy flooding that followed huge inflows into the river from Karnataka.

CHENNAI FLOOD

It was just a matter of 13 hours. On December 1 night, a retired Lieutenant Colonel was taking a walk in his neighbourhood when he noticed the Adyar river rising. By next morning, the water had risen up to their terrace and he had drowned in his home.
The last hours of retired Lt Col G Venkatesan, 72, and his wife Geetha were witnessed by their neighbours S Rajagopalan and S P Sanjay, who themselves struggled to survive the deluge in Chennai last week.

Around 8 pm on December 1, Venkatesan — who stayed in a single-storey house in Ekkatuthangal — was out walking with his neighbour Brigadier Rajagopalan and wife. This was two weeks after heavy rain had wreaked havoc in the city, and dark clouds had returned, portending fresh showers. “Like every year, we saw people on the river bank being evacuated. We didn’t expect our street would get flooded,” Rajagopalan said.
However, two hours later, Rajagopalan spotted water entering his car shed. “At 2 am, I woke up and saw the house was flooded up to knee-level,” he said. He and his wife went up to the terrace.
In the opposite house, Venkatesan was still not worried. Sanjay, a businessman who lives next door, recalled that Venkatesan “was talking loudly on the phone around midnight”.
Around 4.30 am, Sanjay woke up to see his ground floor submerged. “I ran up to the terrace and called Venkatesan. The water had reached halfway up his window.” Sanjay called the Army exchange and demanded immediate rescue of the couple. He was told that a team was on its way. “As the water level rose, Venkatesan stood up on the dining table. Then he placed a chair on it and climbed up. There was no staircase in his house. It could have saved them,” he said.
By 9 am next day, the water had reached the terrace, claiming the couple. The families of Sanjay and Rajagopalan were rescued on December 3 morning. The bodies of Venkatesan and wife were taken out later in the day.

“The state simply cut power and released water and saw people drown. What did they do in the days before the rain?,” Sanjay said.
Rajagopalan said there was no flood warning when the government released 35,000 cusecs of water in the Adyar. “They should have increased the release of water scientifically instead of waiting for the last moment,” he said. Sanjay too said there was no flood warning.
The local police, however, maintain that there were flood warnings, but many families chose to stay back.
A senior official admitted that a systematic release of water in stages would have prevented the disaster. “Reservoirs were empty before Diwali. With the huge amount of water from two major rain in November, we should have released more water after the forecast of a heavier third spell of rain,” he said.
A senior PWD official denied this. He said that the capacity of Adyar is 75,000 cusecs, and that the release on Tuesday night was moderated and reached 35,000 cusecs from 29,000 cusecs in nine hours.
